Lacking Joy? Reconnect with Your Inner Child!

Updated: Jul 15, 2022

When was the last time you did something just because you enjoy it and not because you have to, it makes you look cool, or it helps you achieve your goals?

As adults, we are so engrossed in our daily responsibilities and to-do lists that we don't leave any space for doing things that we purely enjoyed just for the sake of it. This is especially true for those who want to be productive all the time!

I'm here to tell you that it's necessary to regularly do some things that you simply enjoy! This will help you cope with stress from work and uplift your daily life!

I recently realized the fastest way to find joy is to connect back to what you loved to do as a child.

Here are the simple steps I took to reconnect with my inner child to find joy. Hope this will also help you embed more joy in your daily life!

💡 Step 1. Reflect on what you enjoyed doing as a child.

Start by making a list of all the nostalgic activities that you LOVED to do as a child. Think of what you did over the weekend, summer and winter breaks when you were free to do whatever you want. For example, here are two things I loved doing:

  • arts & crafts -- drawing, painting, boondoggle/gimp string plastic lacing

  • reading books -- especially books in Chinese (a rare-find since I lived in Hungary, so I treasured those even more!)

💡 Step 2. Gather all necessary resources.

Pick one or two activities from the list that you can realistically do and gather all the resources!

For example, I signed up for e-card at a local library so that I can borrow books easily to start reading for fun again. I also picked up a new arts & crafts activity by learning to do polymer clay sculpting. I watched tutorials on YouTube and bought polymer clay and sculpting tools on Amazon.

💡 Step 3. Schedule your "play" time.

After reflecting on the activities you enjoyed as a child, you can now build these into your schedule!

For example, I recently started to read books for fun again before going to sleep. I also found some time to play with polymer clay and plan to play with it once a month. Being able to spend some time on these activities has brought me so much joy!

💡 Step 4. Have FUN!

I hope this post has brought back some fun memories and inspired you to take action to re-experience those fun times!

Take Action!

1. Schedule time to do one activity this week that you loved as a child.

2. Leave a comment to share what you are able to do again that brings you pure joy!
